According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, "NAG" means:
intransitive verb
intransitive verb
1: to find fault incessantly : complain
2: to be a persistent source of annoyance or distraction
transitive verb
1: to irritate by constant scolding or urging
A few sitcoms of the 60's and 70's had a character on them who nagged and they were funny.
However, there is nothing funny at all about a person in your life who nags. Their voices become like megaphones as they speak tirelessly about everything that you should, didn't, need to... do. Over time (if we are in situations where we have to endure nags) they become a sore spot that brings out the absolute worse in each of their victims. It doesn't matter how nice, considerate, giving, loving... they are when their mouths are closed.
Nags can be male or female. I believe there is a perfectionist at the heart of every nag. Someone who thinks they are very helpful and for the life of them can't understand why people don't want to be around them. I also believe that for the most part nags live in an idealistic/ perfect world in their own minds and are unable to see how imperfect they themselves actually are.
Please understand that we all have a tendency to nag at times (especially when our children are teenagers; or when our close friends or family members are star struck and skipping merrily into danger). Being a nag however may cause you to be alone and lonely as a way of life. You may even be surrounded by people who stay with you because of obligation. They keep you just outside of ear range for their own sense of self worth.
If you have noticed that you have a way of repelling people and can't figure out why, start paying close attention to what you are saying when you talk to people. Also pay attention to how the people you are communicating with respond (in words and body language). You may discover that you are a nag.
Just a thought.
