Ahhh Success

In honor of African American History Month I made a promise to myself to become more knowledgeable about the profession of my dreams (Sewing and crafting).  Although I have been privileged to be self employed a few times -   I've allowed life's necessities to get in the way of my dreams more often than not.  Even worse - I've thrown myself head first into opportunities and occupations that were not in keeping with my hearts desires in hopes of making a fast profit.

Today as I was looking for a picture of a traditional quilt I stumbled upon an incredible essay titled:
"African-American Quiltmakers in North Louisiana: A Photographic Essay"  by Susan Roach
Click here to read the essay and to see pictures of the quilters and their quilts.

This essay reminded me that a job well done is not only it's own reward but that it will bring with it rewards.  The quilters in this essay were successful in that they accomplished their goal in doing what they knew how to do well. I've read a lot of articles and books and have seen a lot of pictures of African American people throughout history.  One of the things about Dr. Roach's pictures that struck me almost immediately is that the quilters look happy.

Of her work in compiling information for her essay Dr. Roach wrote:
I was struck by the power and dignity of these women, who had chosen the difficult, time-consuming expressive mode of quiltmaking. As documents of their patience, perseverance, and creativity, the quilts also reflect the nurturing, work-filled lives these women have led, living through the Great Depression in the country and city.

Sadly, many of these women have passed on; yet their quilts stand as a memorial honoring them.

The photographs here, taken between 1979-2001, provide a sampling of traditional Louisiana African-American quilters and quilts. To complement the photographs, I have also drawn from my interviews with these quiltmakers, so they may speak for themselves.

Contrary to much of the media hype I hear - success is as individual as individuals.  Success can not be rightly categorized or defined any more than people.  Success is dynamic.  Success is the honor bestowed upon honest effort.  Success is the private badge we all wear for each and every goal we accomplish (small or large).

You are successful!
Andrea
